Atlanta's thunderstorm ground stop lifts at 4 PM as the FAA puts Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Denver on watch for tonight

Atlanta's ground stop expired at 4 PM ET on Friday after thunderstorms soaked Hartsfield-Jackson, the FAA now shows the world's busiest airport back to 15-minute-or-less delays, Delta's Atlanta waiver covers July 24 travel with rebooking open through July 27, the current command-center plan keeps Atlanta, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale flagged for possible ground stops through 8 PM ET and Denver after 6 PM ET as en route thunderstorms close New York and Washington Center routes, a SpaceX Starship launch closes Gulf airspace at 6:45 PM ET, and a midday FlightAware snapshot counted roughly 2,585 delays and 78 cancellations nationwide with Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth tied at 219 delays each.

Atlanta's ground stop: what hit, and where it stands

A ground stop held every flight bound for Hartsfield-Jackson at its origin airport through 4 PM ET on Friday, the FAA's standard move when thunderstorms sit over the field and the arrival corridors close. Atlanta News First reported the stop in effect with rounds of heavy rain continuing through the afternoon and a Flash Flood Warning covering Cherokee, Dawson, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Hall counties until 3:15 PM, with more than six inches already fallen near Gainesville.

The stop has since expired. The FAA's Atlanta status page now shows no destination-specific delays and only 15-minute-or-less departure and arrival delays, meaning the terminal program has lifted even though the convective weather is not gone. The current operations plan, ATCSCC Advisory 084, notes that Atlanta Center and the ATL TRACON report convective weather that "continues to create problems for inbound and outbound traffic," which is why Atlanta remains on the possible-ground-stop list through 8 PM ET rather than cleared.

The midday damage, per a FlightAware snapshot dated 1:28 PM ET relayed by Travel And Tour World, put Hartsfield-Jackson at 219 delays and 6 cancellations, tied with Dallas-Fort Worth at 219 delays, with Dallas-Fort Worth and JFK each at 9 cancellations, and the nationwide count near 2,585 delays and 78 cancellations. Those are early-afternoon figures and will climb if the evening convective windows fire.

If you are flying Delta through Atlanta today, the rebooking path is open. Delta issued its Atlanta Severe Weather waiver on July 23, covering travel to, from, or through Atlanta on July 24 for tickets bought on or before July 23. Tonight's watch list: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Denver, Las Vegas

The same advisory that cleared Atlanta's stop also lays out where the FAA expects the next trouble. In the terminal-planned section, all of these remain on the board: Miami and Fort Lauderdale ground stops possible through 0000Z (8 PM ET), Atlanta ground stop or delay program possible through 0000Z, Denver ground stop or delay program possible after 2200Z (6 PM ET), Las Vegas possible through 0400Z (midnight ET), and San Francisco's routine construction-driven ground delay program possibly returning after 0200Z. San Francisco's current program runs only until 5:29 PM ET. These are POSSIBLE-tier, the lowest-confidence forecast label, so they name the risk without promising it.

The en route picture is broader. Thunderstorms are flagged across the Houston, Washington, Jacksonville, Miami, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Salt Lake, Denver, and Albuquerque centers, with New York Center's AR8, L452, L454, and L456 routes closed due to thunderstorms until 0000Z and Washington Center's AR and Y-routes closed except to international flights until 2200Z. New York Center is also running GPS interference testing through 2200Z. A separate constraint arrives at 6:45 PM ET: SpaceX's Starship Flight 13 launch from Boca Chica, Texas, closes the STARSHIP_WEST airspace through 0056Z, on top of the Lake Erie flow-control areas already active through 0300Z.

Three staffing triggers are live. The L30 TRACON is triggered through 2300Z, Indianapolis Center's Area 3 from 2200Z to 0230Z (newly added today, with Indianapolis still evaluating whether route restrictions are needed), and the D10 TRACON through 0300Z. The next command-center planning webinar was set for 2115Z, 5:15 PM ET.

Both threads that dominated the past week are closed. Tropical Storm Bertha dissipated inland over eastern Texas, and JetBlue's crew-scheduling meltdown has eased back to routine cancellation levels with its waiver now expired.
