Teterboro is in a live TFR security ground stop until 6:30 PM ET

The FAA's Command Center issued a CDM ground stop for Teterboro at 4:10 PM ET, running until 6:30 PM ET, holding 2,061 flights with a maximum delay of 206 minutes and an average of 108 minutes. The impacting condition is security, and the advisory states the stop is "due to TFR," with gateway airports Philadelphia and Allentown exempt. The extension probability is medium, meaning the stop could run past 6:30 PM.

This is the Teterboro VOR security flight restriction (TFR 6/6313) that activated on schedule at 1:30 PM ET and runs until 8:30 PM ET, covering the World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Teterboro is the closest general-aviation airport to MetLife, 5.5 miles away, and the TFR restricts operations over the Teterboro VOR/DME within a 2-nautical-mile radius up to 2,000 feet.

The ground stop replaced an earlier Teterboro stop that ran until 4:30 PM ET per the FAA's 3:48 PM ET operations plan. flightcheck.live's FAA-derived feed, last checked at 4:54 PM EDT, confirms Teterboro is in a ground stop due to security with an expected end time of 6:30 PM EDT, with departure delays of 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 44 minutes due to VIP movement.

Newark is in a VIP ground delay program until 10:59 PM ET

Newark went into a security ground stop at 2:29 PM ET, holding 922 flights, with the FAA citing "rolling demand resulting from VIP movement / flyover" and noting arrivals and departures should resume within 5 minutes. That stop ended at 3:45 PM ET and transitioned into a ground delay program running until 10:59 PM ET.

The proposed GDP, published at 3:31 PM ET, set Newark's airport rate at 36 operations per hour with an anticipated maximum delay of 218 minutes and an average of 78 minutes. The FAA's advisory states the delay is "due to demand pushed by VIP movement and TFR," and flags a VIP movement expected at 6:30 PM ET, with the 11 PM hour set at a reduced 28-operation rate to build recovery for the associated holding.

flightcheck.live reports Newark ground delays averaging 1 hour 22 minutes due to VIP movement, with departure delays of 15 to 29 minutes. FlightAware's live airport-delay feed shows Newark departure delays averaging 1 hour 9 minutes and increasing, and Dulles departure delays averaging 52 minutes and increasing.

Newark is also operating under a standing FAA cap of 72 operations per hour through October 24 2026, driven by air traffic control staffing shortages and aging infrastructure, with the Area C radar approach control at 60.8 percent of its target staffing and a full complement not expected before summer 2027.

The FAA's operations plan flags a VIP departure from Newark after 6 PM ET and a VIP arrival at Andrews Air Force Base after 7 PM ET, consistent with a presidential departure after the World Cup Final. The match, Spain versus Argentina, kicked off at 3 PM ET and was scoreless through the second half at publish time.

A second Atlanta ground stop fired at kickoff and ran to 4:15 PM ET

The first Atlanta thunderstorm ground stop, covered in the last issue, ran from 1:32 PM to 2:45 PM ET holding 2,084 flights. A second ground stop fired at 3:03 PM ET, minutes after the World Cup Final kickoff, and ran to 4:15 PM ET.

The second stop peaked at 1,646 flights with a maximum delay of 147 minutes and an average of 66 minutes, with the FAA citing thunderstorms and "no routes for northwest corner gate into ATL." The stop was extended twice, first holding departures from the Memphis, Kansas City, and Indianapolis centers, then adding the Fort Worth center, as thunderstorms blocked arrival routes through the Memphis airspace.

The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, Georgia, had a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and a Slight Risk (2 of 5) for severe weather active across portions of north Georgia through the afternoon and evening, with the 3:52 PM ET observation at Atlanta showing cumulonimbus clouds, lightning, and light rain at 75 degrees with a west-southwest wind. Atlanta is now on time per flightcheck.live, but the FAA's operations plan lists an Atlanta ground delay program as possible until 7 PM ET and a Charlotte ground stop or delay program as possible until 7 PM ET.

Southeast thunderstorms are building toward the Florida hubs

The afternoon shift from Northeast weather to Southeast convection is now underway. flightcheck.live reports departure delays of 31 to 45 minutes at Fort Lauderdale due to weather, 16 to 30 minutes at Orlando, and 16 to 30 minutes at Miami. Philadelphia departure delays are running 46 minutes to 1 hour due to weather, and LaGuardia departures are 31 to 45 minutes due to weather.

The FAA's 3:48 PM ET operations plan lists ground stops as possible at Tampa and Orlando until 7 PM ET, a ground stop or delay program at Nashville until 10 PM ET, and a San Francisco ground delay program as possible through the night due to low ceilings. Dallas-Fort Worth CDRS rerouting is active due to weather, and the ZNY oceanic routes L452, L454, and L455 are closed due to thunderstorms through 8:30 PM ET. Washington National is reporting arrival delays up to 30 minutes due to security and compacted demand through 10:30 PM ET.
